Dennis Schleve of Sequim, Washington, built and owns this 1936 Dodge 5-window coupe. He has had the car for 30 years, but it’s only been on the road for four years of those three decades. After sitting for so long, the whole project took just one short winter to complete.
It’s powered by a 400 cubic inch Chrysler engine and transmission that both came out of a retired police cruiser. The 3.53:1 geared rearend is from a 1970 Chrysler wagon and the engine is fueled by a 650cfm Holley carburetor. A conglomeration of parts, the whole project cost Dennis a small sum of $3,000. Pretty much all of the parts used in the build are used and came off of another vehicle. Even the gauges are just odds and ends that he has picked up over the years.
“I tried to build it like an old racecar that had been drug out of a barn,” Dennis explained. “I wanted it to look like it was built years ago.” He definitely achieved that look, and it really does appear to have been built decades ago and only recently have been dragged out of a barn and put back into working order.
Dennis is no stranger to high speeds. As a matter of fact, Dennis told us about a time when he held a land speed record that he earned on the Bonneville Salt Flats. What record was that? Well, Dennis held the record for class A motorhome speed, which he broke while driving a 1974 GMC Transmode.
