The first time Bill saw the wagon, he looked at it, felt that it was in good shape, but had one concern that prevented him from buying it. “It’s just got too many doors,” explained Bill Cyr, the now owner of this 1957 Chevy wagon. “It’s nice, but it’s got too many doors.” Bill and his wife Becky live in University Place, Washington, and the two didn’t quite see eye-to-eye on this car at first.
Now that they've had it for a couple years, bill has grown to appreciate the car and worked to customize it and make it theirs.
Bill was in the midst of restoring a 1957 Chevy two-door hardtop, but Becky didn’t want to way 5 or 7 years before they’d be able to take a classic car to shows. This one had been sitting for sale since 1996 when Bill looked at it in 2004. It was a turn-key river, it was in good shape, but Bill just couldn’t get over the extra doors.
It wasn’t until after the Puyallup Goodguys show in 2004 that Becky decided she was ready to drive a classic car—and two extra doors were not going to get in her way. She went with her son to go look at the car and the bought it that Saturday while Bill was at work.
There was a cruising spot in South Tacoma that they’d go to occasionally and that was where Becky and their son decided to tell Bill about the car. “As I turned the corner my son was walking up to me with the bill of sale and the keys in his hand,” Bill recounted. “They told me in a public place because they didn’t know how I’d react.”
The color changing LED-halo headlights are a cool touch. The blue is called Bright Calypso Poly and the black is off a Dodge Magnum wagon.
Sufficed to say, Bill has grown to be pretty happy with the car and by this time we get the impression that he’s glad his wife and son bought the car, even though they did it behind his back. It’s a fun driver that’s powered by a 327 cubic-inch motor that’s been bored .30 over, Holley 600cfm carburetor, a 700-R4 automatic transmission, and a positraction rearend with 3.73:1 gearing.
The interior has been upgraded with custom, route-66 inserts selected by Becky, Classic Instruments gauges, and an ididit tilt steering column. It’s a great looking car with a lot of retro touches that made it worth a second look.
We love the Cyr’s four-door wagon, and we’d love to see more of what you folks are driving out there. If you’ve got a cool car hiding in your garage, don’t hesitate to send us an email and show it off. It might even end up as one of our Street Features.
