The gasser style of hot rod has always been a cool look for the Tri-Fives. It’s an established look that gives the builder the freedom to make it their own. The really cool thing about the gassers is that no two are ever the same, and it’s the subtleties that make the big difference.
This yellow 1955 Chevy Gasser was built by Nick Danyluk of Olympia, Washington. Nick has had this car for 35 years, but only just finished it a few months ago in June. Although this is a fresh built car, it closely emulates the look of a true 1960s gasser!
“It was already in good shape when I bought it,” Nick explained. “I paid $300 for it in Phoenix with no engine or transmission. That was a good deal even 35 years ago!” He always knew he was going to do something with it, but didn’t have a plan nailed down until about a year ago when he was having coffee with some friends. “They were ragging on me to do something with it,” he told us. “So I did.”
Nick has a friend with a similarly built ’55 Chevy and he went that direction with the build. He also had won the wheels at a Goodguys show raffle in 2003 so they had been in his shop ever since. He built the whole car with these wheels in mind.
It has a 14.5:1 compression 454 cubic-inch LS7 engine in it with dual Holley carbs on a tunnel ram intake. Nick used a four-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch rearend with 4.11:1 gearing. It is meant to go and we’re sure that Nick has been enjoying breaking in this recently completed car.
Nick is planning on taking the car out to Michigan for the dream cruise from Detroit to Pontiac. “We used to race along that route,” he told us. While he enjoys driving his car, the plan is to trailer it out there. A gasser like this isn’t designed for long road trips. As fast as it would get you there, it would cost a fortune in fuel, and Nick explained why: “It gets about a mile per gallon.” We can understand trailering it across the country, but glad to hear he enjoys driving it, too.
