This ’66 Chevelle defines old-school cool. It belongs to Jim Guenther of Puyallup, Washington, and was built like they were in the heyday of hot rods and street rods. Jim’s had the car about eleven years, he bought it with a design in mind, and he’s got five-years’ worth of sweat equity in the final product.
“It had a dent in every panel and the roof, and it was about seven different colors,” Jim told us. “I had been looking for five-years when I found this car out in eastern Washington.” It came to Jim with a simple 283 cubic-inch engine and two-speed Powerglide transmission, but it was destined for so much more.
That's a good lookin' engine.
The updated drivetrain is made up of a Pace Performance 383 cubic-inch stroker with Keith Black pistons, Pro-Comp heads, and an Isky mega-camshaft. “It’s kind of old school,” Jim said. The power-punching Pace Performance engine is linked to a Turbo 400 transmission with a 2,400 stall converter and 10-bolt 3.73 geared positraction rearend in the back. The whole system is fueled by a Demon 750 cfm carburetor.
The interior is relatively simple and features the stock gauges with a tachometer and Auto Meter secondary cluster down below for extra information regarding oil pressure, voltage, and water temperature. It also has a rollcage for safety, and newer racing seats for comfort and support.
On top of everything else, this beast has disc brakes all around, electric exhaust cutouts, and a fiberglass hood. The color a Candy Blue by House of Kolor, and it really makes this Chevelle pop. And, the coolest part about this hot rod, it’s no trailer queen. “I drive it,” Jim told us.
We love Jim’s Chevelle, and we’d love to see what you folks are driving out there. If you love it, odds are good that we will too, so shoot us an email with a couple pictures and a little information on your ride, you might just see it here as one of our Street Features.
