We Take A Closer Look At The 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

HellcatCharger045We were at a Chrysler Media Event in Malibu, California taking a few test drives in the new Challenger SRT Hellcat and SRT Viper TA. The test drives were the best part of the day, without a doubt, but second best was being able to get an up close look at the new 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.

No splitter like the Challenger Hellcat, but this front fascia was designed to be very aerodynamic and help the Charger get to 204 mph.

The car was a static display for us media people, meaning, it was only there to look at, inspect, open the doors and the hood, and that was about it. We would have loved to take it out on the winding roads around Mulholland Drive, but the Challenger and Viper were enough to whet our appetites for horsepower, and the Charger just sat there and looked sexy as hell.

The Hellcat Challenger has received much of the media attention this past summer, with all sorts of videos and articles about how amazing the car is. It made for a pretty tough act to follow, but Chrysler has done it again with the Charger SRT Hellcat. The Charger SRT Hellcat has the same, 707 horsepower Hellcat Hemi, but it won’t get the six-speed manual transmission that the Challenger SRT Hellcat gets, at least not yet. It will get the same eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and just like the Challenger Hellcat, the engine, transmission, and suspension have three settings: Track, Sport, and Street (Default), or you can customize the settings to suit your needs.

The rear spoiler was raised a little and redesigned to help create more downforce at 200 mph.

There are some features that can be adjusted within each setting, or you can go wild and completely customize the settings for shock absorber rates, transmission shifting, and even horsepower. There are three settings for horsepower: 300, 500, and what Mopar lists as “700+.”

These settings are great for when you loan your car to a friend, or maybe hand it off to the valet at a fancy restaurant. These settings will limit the power output and subsequently keep your friend – or the valet – from doing a bunch of burnouts while you’re away.

The Challenger got most of the press this summer is a tough act to follow, but the Charger did it just a little bit better.

But we’re going to recommend that you don’t loan your Charger Hellcat to a friend, and that you park it yourself. This is not a car that you want in the hands of an inexperienced driver. While it does have two more doors and more room than the Challenger Hellcat, there is a little more to this Charger than meets the eye. As difficult as it may be to believe, the Charger Hellcat is .2 quicker in the quarter mile than the Challenger Hellcat (11.0 vs 11.2), and it’s also 5 mph faster at top end, ringing in a 204 mph top speed.

“Look at her, just sitting there with her fine self.”

How does the Charger end up beating it’s smaller (and lighter) sibling? According to President and CEO of Dodge and SRT Brands, Tim Kuniskis, the extra 100 pounds that the Charger is carrying helps it get off the line quicker. And the top end was a goal, not merely the speed they ended up with. Chrysler engineers set out to achieve 200 mph from the Charger Hellcat, and sculpted areas of the car in the wind tunnel to reach that go-to number.

The hood scoop received some smoothing, and the rear spoiler was raised slightly to help provide a little more downforce. Anyone who has been disappointed with the Dart-like front end of the 2015 Charger will undoubtedly notice (and approve of) the modified front fascia on the Hellcat. The front fascia is not only larger but provides additional cooling. There are two vents on the side of the hood scoop, like the Challenger, that aid in extracting underhood heat.

The Charger is back, and even though it has more doors than many enthusiasts care for, there’s no denying that Chrysler has set the standard for the rest of the world to follow. Being the world’s fastest four-door sedan, and possessing more power and running a quicker ET than any other musclecar, it’s further proof that Chrysler let the big dogs out to play. And if you’re not careful… the Charger Hellcat will eat your car for lunch and spit it out with a wicked howl from the supercharger.
