More Hooniverse skullduggery comin’ atcha…Check out the GMC Syclone and Typhoon, S-15 based GMC AWD hot rods from the bad old days of General Motors. A quick glance at the photos and it’s easy to say, “Oh boy.” Both of these rigs suffer abysmal plastic dashboards, flexible flier chassis rigidity and so-so build quality. Regardless, they were good looking rigs with very cool hardware, especially for the early-nineties.
Both featured a Mitsubishi TD06 turbocharger and a Garrett water/air intercooler attached to a 4.3 liter V6 with unique pistons, main caps, head gaskets, intake manifolds, fuel system, exhaust manifolds, and a 48mm twin-bore throttle body from the 5.7 small block.
All Syclones and Typhoons used GM 4L60 4-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner transfer case splitting torque with 35% forward and 65% to the rear. The motor was rated at 280 hp and capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and do the quarter-mile run in 13.4 seconds at 98 mph.
Upgraded brakes and sport suspension tuning completed the tweaks. Unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon featured an air-operated self leveling rear suspension.
Both trucks were built for GM by Production Automotive Services of Troy, Michigan. A total of 4,697 Typhoons were built: 2,497 in 1992, and 2,200 in 1993. Syclones, only available in black, tallied 2995 for 1991 and 3 for 1992.
The Syclone featured here is a “Saudi Syclone,” one of 113 that were exported to Saudi Arabia, but now is currently located in Austin, Texas. The Typhoon is currently located in Finland. Both have been breathed on and can be yours just in time for Christmas.
