The Mad Genius Did It Again: KITT Replica Gets Remote Controls

That’s right, Bjorn Harms is at it again. In a previous article we ran on this “Mad Genius” on his remote-controlled C6 Corvette. The Corvette was also featured on the Discovery Channel on Outrageous Acts Of Science. Well, now he has completed his KITT replica with – you guessed it – remote control.119a636f-033a-4c84-8395-7ff0b6800107

Here is the 'before' the transformation. All of that massive 185 horsepower V8 was coming out.

He mentioned in the previous article, “I was a big Knight Rider fan when I was a kid. I promised myself to buy a Firebird and build it as a KITT replica. I started working on cars and electronics when I was 19. The Internet is the best teacher, and I am not afraid to take something apart. I also broke and blew up some stuff over the years, but, that’s how you learn.”

“When I got older, I got more and more interested in Corvettes than KITT replicas. Owning a Pontiac Firebird KITT replica is brutal — Too nerve racking. So, add those three things up with a crazy mind, and you’ll get an RC Corvette. And the other part of it is that I love telling people my crazy ideas, even though nobody believed that I could pull it off. So it became a challenge.”

KITT2Now, he has finally completed his childhood dream. He has managed to take a Firebird and make it more like the real KITT than many other attempts we’ve seen. The one thing that is so great about Bjorn is he is always taking photos and videos of his progress. By doing that, he is not only showing his skills of electronics, he is also giving another ‘mad genius in the making’ a chance to see how it is done and they can possibly build one themselves. Every video he posts on his Firebird KITT project, he is asked how it’s done.

You can see the detail he put into everything, including the door panels.

Being very forthcoming with the information, he explains, “It’s no secret. I have built a universal control unit that can control 12V motors and/or servos. In that controller, you can hook up every receiver you want with any transmitter. But I provide a special customized transmitter with the set.” He intends on offering the kit once perfected for $3,400)

He continued, “Then you have the wiring, that controls all the motors and servos that are placed on all the controls of the car, and thats it.”

Attention to details, no part of the car was ignored, this was to be a true KITT replica.

The advantage to this remote kit is when you drive it normally, the remote equipment does not interfere with the everyday driving. Everything is controlled mechanically, even the ‘turn off’ button. Once he got the first remote car done, the C6 Corvette, people were asking if it was real. Another challenge for Bjorn to prove himself and his equipment being real.

Bjorn spent much of his time on YouTube watching everything he could find on 1:1 remote control cars. It helped him to redesign his creation to ensure the safety of the cars as well as safety in the design as well.

If you want to keep abreast of his latest projects, commission your own full size RC car, or maybe give a very talented problem-solver a job, you can find him on Facebook and subscribe to his YouTube channel. And we’ll follow up with his next project: A Remote Control Back To The Future Delorean replica.
