We are going to come right out and say it, this 1974 AMC Hornet is not one of the best looking cars we have ever seen. That being said it’s probably faster than a lot of cars on the street today. A rumblin’ 400 Horsepower 361 sits under it’s hood, making this ugly ’70s compact a force to be reckoned with on the street.
The rumblin’ 361 was built from a ’69-’80 Chevy 350 four bolt main. The motor has been bored .060 over and its been hopped up with Speed Pro pistons filling cylinders that have been punched out to 2.02 & modified with stainless steel valves and Z28 springs. An Edelbrock performer intake manifold sits on top and a Holley 750 CFM Double Pumper delivers the juice. The roar of the engine can be heard a dual H-pipe exhaust system equipped with raptor mufflers.
The 361 is mated to a rebuilt Th350 transmission. The TH350 has been machined and modified with a clutch pack, a stage two shifter kit and a B&M ratchet shifter. The interior still needs work but it has a pair of 4-point leather bucket seats and the steering column from a 1987 Trans Am.
We are not sure what is going on with the exterior as it has some weird designs in the paint job. We are not sure what the designs are but we are sure they are there to blind rival drivers with ugliness to distract them from the cars massive power. This ugly duckling is perhaps one of the most interesting sleeper cars we have seen, it’s currently for sale on Craigslist. If you were to build a sleeper, what car would you use as the platform?
