This Hotchkis-Equipped ’70 Superbird Wows At Warner Center

The Sunday car meet at Warner Center always promises to bring together some of the Valley’s rarest specimens of American muscle, but in the case of this orange Superbird, the story behind the car is one of NASCAR racing’s greatest milestone during the apex of the muscle car era.

Featuring a 150mph, factory speedometer and a large rear spoiler for maximum downforce, the Superbird was set-up for a much higher degree of high-speed driving than it’s regular-optioned B-bodied counterparts.

Like the Charger Daytona, the Road Runner Superbird was enhanced in terms of aerodynamics, something that was not a strong point for the B-body fleet.

The 440 motor under the hood of this HEMI Orange Superbird is factory-correct, though the whole motor has been re-worked to produce around 500bhp. The ‘Bird also features an era-correct automatic with a center console, brandishing Warner Bros’ infamous cartoon bird in the center of the factory steering wheel.

Meticulously restored by Restorations By Julius, the ‘Bird sports a black vinyl top – also an option on Superbirds – and the car’s original 8-track player. Unlike the original, though, is a full TVS Hotchkis suspension setup, ensuring that this big bird will handle the curves as well as the big track with ease.

The “HEMI Orange” option differs from the “Vitamin C” orange in the sense that “Vitamin C” paint was just a few shades lighter, the “HEMI” color almost dark enough to be red.

Of all of the Mopar muscle cars that rolled into the Warner Center on Sunday morning (Mopar didn’t seem to be as well-represented as the other makes at the local meet), this HEMI Orange Superbird was the “one” that we just had to capture; its rear spoiler stands almost to the clouds, rising above the masses, and its psychedelic color scheme and cartoonish nature are characteristics that are undecidedly Mopar.
