When one thinks of late-’70s Firebirds, particularly Trans Ams, its typically in the iconic black-and-gold livery made famous by Burt Reynolds. But we would like to offer this sleek silver and black X-code 10th Anniversary Edition for your pleasure. In celebration of the passing of a decade since Pontiac Trans Am debuted in 1969, Pontiac released a 10th Anniversary Edition. Recently, this Tenth Anniversary Trans Am was listed on eBay. This particular Trans Am is unusual in that it’s never been restored but was maintained in excellent condition for its 32 years.
One of the 7,500 Tenth Anniversary Editions made, this was ordered with the optional Oldsmobile 403cui V8 which came equipped with an automatic transmission, compared to the available Pontiac 400 with a 4-Speed gearbox. Of all the production cars, 1,817 were equipped with the 400/4-speed combo while 5,683 were equipped with the 403/auto.
The WS6 handling package came standard on all the Tenth Anniversary Editions. The original power locks, windows and trunk release, as well as air conditioner still remained in the car. This car was very well maintained and was only driven a total of 43,437 miles in its life time.
True to its tenth or “silver” anniversary status, the Trans Am still had its original two-tone silver and charcoal paint, five-color hood bird, and black and red pinstriping. The Trans Am also had the Tenth Anniversary badges on the fenders. The interior came in gray with red-illuminated gauges, shag carpet and embroidered door panels. Mirrored T-tops and Turbo wheels came standard on this Trans Am seen on later on the Special Edition Turbo, Pace Car, and other Turbo Trans Ams.
Also standard on all 10th Anniversary Trans Ams were power windows, power locks, Air Conditioning, power trunk release. And unlike previous Special Edition Trans Ams, this car could easily be identified by using the VIN number. Instead of the normal “S” or “W” to signify Firebird or Trans Am, the 10th Anniversary had a “X” as the second digit in the VIN number.
