With all the power that’s being fed to modern musclecar transmissions these days, getting that power to hook up takes a clutch that can handle the kind of torque that’s being produced. And now the Hemi engines in Dodge Challengers have been expanded from 2008-12 with a twin-disc clutch kits from Advanced Clutch Technology (ACT). These twin-disc clutches can put up the clamping force necessary to handle from 875 up to an incredible 1470 ft-lb of torque.
There are several different clutch kits to choose from, from a Heavy Duty Street Twin-Disc Kit to the MaXX Xtreme Race Twin-Disc Kit. While some of these kits aren’t recommended for street use, the street twin-disc kits will provide twice the clamping surface to help make those launches and shifts happen without twice the pedal effort.
The street twin-disc kits include two, premium organic spring-centered discs, while the race kits include two, 6-pad rigid-hub discs. The three different clamp load designs of each street or race kit provide the performance you need for your high-horsepower Hemi. They include a dynamically balanced, CNC-machined flywheel, and the overall kits provide a 10 percent reduction in weight over the factory clutches.
The kits also include a proprietary positive lift floater system from ACT, that will compensate for disc wear. This means that both discs have progressive and equal disengagement for the best engagement feel and is designed for quiet operation and no floater disc rattle or post wear.
With these expanded kits, those twin-turbo or supercharged Challengers are added to the arsenal of vehicles that ACT is covering for high-performance clutch systems. Check out the ACT website for these and other applications added to their twin-disc clutch kits for your performance muscle car.
