With barn finds becoming less common, Cars In Barns is a great place to begin the search for the forgotten, the internet provides a modern approach to searching for a lost treasure. On the website you are likely to find everything from the rotting away ’66 Mustang to the rusting ’57 Chevy pick-up truck, leaving you wishing you could win the lottery to save a few of these classics.
Often, these rides are found everywhere from an old warehouse to a field, and sometimes being used as a live-stock feeder by the local farmer. Occasionally, we find one with a tree growing where the engine used to be, it’s said either way.
The latest orphaned find is an Oldsmobile 442, found under a carport in Laurinburg, North Carolina. By all signs, this ride has been abandoned on an old piece of property and the neighbors seem unsure of who it might belong to.
The Olds 442 was one of the original muscle cars making its debut in 1964 and was in production until 1991. This beast was dubbed the 442 for its four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust. Although the specs would change through the years, the name stuck. The 442 was known for its balanced performance and exceptional handling, it was a mean power packed machine in its day.
From all appearances this orphan appears to have a good base to work from. For someone looking for their next build project this would make the perfect canvas to create an amazing piece of art. If Tom Petty was giving a review on this ride today he might say “I got a 442 sittin’ in the sun/Well it’s been ten years since she used to run/Man she was a beauty in ’69…” – lyrics from the great Tom Petty. We sure would like to see this 442 run in the sun again, Tom.
