Though the Callaway Corvette and the Buick GNX are the two most amazing, factory-built GM performers of the late ’80s and early ’90s, this drag-race video, captured in March of 1987, shows that Buick actually had the upper hand.

The running dynamic of GM’s historic turbo-V6 is a story that is as epic as the limited-production models in which the high-output motor was used.

With its infamous 3.8 turbo V6 mill, the “Darth Vader” Buick is one not to be messed with. If you don’t believe the legend, just take a look at what this all-stock GNX, at the time a new car, does to this Callaway-tuned Corvette.

In the instance of this straight-lined fight between the Callaway ‘Vette and the blacked-out GNX, the ‘Vette actually seems to take the lead for the very first, split second. But no matter how many times the hardcore GM guys complain about the Buick’s notorious turbo lag, the amount of downtime needed for the intercooled Garrett unit to spool is still minimum, and this minimal downtime is obviously no determining factor for the GNX that, here, is delivering a serious beating to the extremely limited-production Corvette. And a “beating” it is, as the all-black, turbo Regal pulls past the Callaway repeatedly, even during pre-stage while burning-out!

With all of the technology that we have nowadays in digital photo and video editing, it’s hard to know what’s real and what’s fake. But when it comes to the impressive reputation behind GM’s famed “Turbo 6,” I guess YouTube videos just don’t lie!
