New Zealand is more than just the land of kiwis, Lorde, and the Lord of the Rings franchise. Home to some 4.5 million human beings, there’s bound to be at least a few that dig the hot rodding scene, and sure enough, there is.
The annual Kumeu Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival, which celebrated its 21st anniversary this year, is one such venue to find fans of all things classic and vintage. Taking place on the 17th and 18th of January at the A&P Showgrounds, the event drew a massive crowd who brought along everything from Tri-Fives to muscle cars to odd little motorized cooler scooters.
The above video, uploaded by YouTube user Ashley Killip, provides an extended look into the show. Suffice it to say, the cars and their owners are doing a very good job of winning the hearts and minds of our Kiwi cousins.
Special attractions included some voluptuous babes advertising the Beach Buggies company, specializing in kits and parts to convert VW Bugs into Meyers Manx-style vehicles. There was even a chainsaw competition, which we catch a glimpse of at the 11:19 mark. We’re not sure how the contest was judged, but it’s still fun to watch.
Hot rods saw some great representation, whether it was the T-bucket drag racer at 19:00 or the ruby red ’55 Chevy at 14:18. Needless to say, hot rodding is alive and well out in New Zealand, and will continue to thrive as long as these people keep the passion going.
