We have another retro car review for you voiced by Bud Lindemann, and this time the featured star is a 1974 Oldsmobile Omega S Hatchback.
As always, this model was the top of the heap and was optioned out with Rallye suspension, front disc brakes, and a 4-barrel 350 V8. This feature was originally put together for Car and Track, and while Lindemann did his best to highlight the positives of the little Olds, truth be told there wasn’t much he could say about it.
By 1974, the V8’s rolling out of Detroit were so choked back with smog equipment that we’re surprised they could run at all. Lindemann actually joked about one of the 0-60 runs they did when a small squeal of the tires happened saying, “The third time off the line I think there was actually a squeal of rubber, which is rather rare today with all of the clean air plumbing.”
As an example of how little power it had, the quarter mile took 18.1 seconds. No, that was not a typo. 18.1 seconds.
From a handling perspective the car looked like a handful to drive. Going through the slalom cones the tail was wagging considerably, not due to power mind you, but just by swinging weight distribution. It plowed through most corners so deeply that the whitewalls disappeared, but we’ll cut the OldsmoBuick some slack as it likely handled quite a bit better than an Olds 10 years it’s senior!
