From spitting flames to burning rubber, there are quite a few things hot rods can do really well. One feature that may not immediately come to mind, yet it is quite important, is that these classics can also be put toward raising funds for charity.
One club in southern Texas, Coastal A’s and Rods, did just that. This past weekend, hundreds of hot rods, muscle cars, and restored trucks made a big show in Corpus Christi to help support local charities. It was the club’s 22nd annual car show, which always takes place every Memorial Day weekend.
One of the beneficiaries was Driscoll Children’s Hospital, named after Clara Driscoll, an affluent cattlewoman whose will called for the building of a “charitable hospital dedicated to indigent children.” Constructed in 1953, the hospital has served as an indispensable non-profit to the community, and continues to do so thanks to the generous actions taken by Coastal A’s and Rods.
Starting last Friday, the rodders rode in on their Tri-Fives, Deuce coupes, and more to the parking lot of the nearby Holiday Inn. The following evening, the guys packed up and made a flashy parade down to Snapka’s Drive-In, their favorite watering hole and the go-to spot for the club’s weekly get-togethers.
Coastal A’s and Rods draws its roots back to 1992, starting with around fifty men who just liked to talk cars. Since then, the club has grown to include over three hundred members, and continues to garner new fans and members thanks to its dedication to real enthusiasts and frequent philanthropic activities.
