Video: Mustang Owners Have Engine Swap Choices With QA1

Whether you’re into drag racing or road racing, the number of aftermarket performance components available to help you get better track times has gearheads rejoicing. Knowing that a company has a component made specifically for your car is like finding that proverbial needle in a haystack, and it’s worth sharing with others.

So when QA1 launched the newly redesigned K-Member for 1979-2004 Mustangs, it was something we liked seeing. We first saw it at SEMA in 2016, and it opens up the possibilities for engine swaps like never before.

For starters, the QA1 K-Member is up to 50 percent lighter than its OEM counterpart, but the tubular design and reinforcing makes it much stronger, too. Its made with HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy) metal, and tips the scales at about 25 pounds.

Some of the changes include adjustments to the lower control arm mounts that help correct roll center issues with a lowered vehicle. This puts your control arms at a better angle for cornering, without sacrificing center of gravity. Another change is the rack & pinion inserts that are reversible to give you up to an inch of movement to raise or lower the height of the rack for clearance or steering geometry.

But one of the coolest features is the engine mounting plates, which are changeable and allow anything from your stock mod motor, to a Coyote, or even an LS for those who dare to be different. Header clearance is also increased.

The K-Member is designed to keep the wheel in the same location as the factory wheel, and requires a coilover shock system rather than the OE front springs. The K-Member is included in Level 2 and Level 3 Handling Kits, as well as Level 2 Drag Racing Kits.

Check out the improved Mustang K-Member for 1979-2004 Ford Mustangs at the QA1 website. For other vehicles, including Mopar and GM, QA1 has suspension and handling kits for these makes as well.
