Video: VP Racing Fuels Breaks Down The Evolution Of The Fuel Pump

Offering the world the best performance race fuel blends, specifically for motorsports, VP Racing Fuels works strenuously to be the leader in their industry. Posted on YouTube, we get some insight on the evolution of the mechanical fuel pump with engine guru Freddie Turza.

In the video, Turza explains how previous designs of fuel pumps were quite restrictive, impeding proper flow to specific components. Over the years the fuel pump has evolved due to advancements in engineering, construction, and overall design.

Newer model fuel pumps allow for more fuel flow and are more universal due to their fittings. As an example, Turza compares an old fuel pump, which has just three valves versus a newer pump that has six valves.

The older fuel pump on the left was constructed with restrictive valve openings. To the right is its successor, which is less restrictive and made of zinc.

Turza said the six valve fuel pump was designed sometime during the 60s, the six valve fuel pump was made from zinc and included 180 degree openings, which worked well in specific applications that were not mentioned.

Turza showed us the internals of a nickel-plated fuel pump, which provides excellent fuel flow and the least restrictive option available.

Moving to a billet pump, it has just five valves but the cross bar inside each of the valve openings allows for optimum flow and the least amount of fuel restriction.

According to Turza, valving should be open so that fuel can easily flow into the engine. Lastly, Turza showed a nickel plated valve body, which is preferred for applications that are subjected to oxygenated fuel or corrosion.

What kind of fuel pump are you running under the hood of your ride? Have you cared to consider the importance of an unrestrictive fuel pump?

Feel free to share your thoughts below. Also, don’t forget to check out VP Racing Fuels website to see what they’re blending next. With over 70 different brands of race fuel, traction compound, and oils, where can you go wrong for premium fuel?

Fuel pumps have grown smaller and more efficient in design as the years have passed, allowing for better flow quantity and quality.
