When Ford Motor Company debuted their SVT-modified F150 creation back in 2009 dubbed the “Raptor”, instantly the interweb was aflame about the performance and capabilities of the truck. It was designed right from the start to be a truck that was factory-built to be off-road capable in a way that a traditional F150 never has been. Over the years they have refined the truck and made many improvements based on owner input and internal testing.
FoMoCo even built a 62-mile durability test track in the California desert to mimic the conditions the Raptor might see at the Baja 1000 off-road race. The Raptor features an awesome 6.2-liter, 411 horsepower powerplant, a number of other specialized off-road features, and modified Fox Racing shocks that have been designed for the rigors of off-roading.
That being said, we don’t think the SVT engineers did much testing of the vehicle with flat-bottom landings, and if they did, it certainly wasn’t under heavy throttle like this owner inflicted. The jump is big, but the revs are bigger – and the owner hits this jump around 60MPH, overshooting the landing area, setting off the airbags, and earning himself and his passenger a quick trip to the emergency room in the back of an ambulance.
While we’re not surprised to see a Raptor owner putting his truck through its paces, nor are we surprised to see the end result, we do have to say that it doesn’t appear to have been a well-thought-out idea to take the jump in the first place. End result – two busted faces, one busted tire, one busted Raptor. We’d venture to guess he won’t try that again. Nothing like killing a brand-new $50,000 truck. Know your vehicle, and know what’s it’s capable of, or you might end up like this guy.
