If nothing else, one thing that BBC’s Top Gear television show is successful at is promoting, eh…discussion. Like the Brits of long ago, this particular group has been on an Imperialistic mission to take advantage of worldwide auto enthusiasm. Expansion into America, Australia and, most recently, China, have proven moderately successful, even if taking a couple of attempts.
By any definition in the world of television, having survived as many seasons as the original series has, is the peak of enviable success. By all accounts, the next seven generations of sneering, sarcastic, little Clarksons will never have to work a day if they choose not to.
That is the kind of result that inspires knock-offs and we’ve got a new one for you. Within the first ten words sputtered from the video below, you’ll know that this particular effort comes to us from the land down under. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that except that you have to listen a little harder to keep up with the monolog or dialogue, as the case may be.
The production values behind this pilot episode are actually pretty good and the editing is also reasonable. The choice of cars is open to question, though drifting in a ’69 Dodge Charger does look interesting. The Plymouth Valiant is a bit uninspiring; despite the prodigious amount of tire smoke it can produce.
Michael Bozza is the front man for the show and appears to have some history in the auto business. Chasing down the URL on the side of his car leads us to a scrap car towing business. We do hope that this won’t be the only source of rides in future episodes, though.
If nothing else, it will be the typical Australian irreverence for the establishment that makes us look forward to the possibility of future episodes from Mr. Bozza. We’ve seen a good number of memorable things come out of Australia and perhaps this might develop into one more.
