With the loss of Pontiac, GM has now shifted prospective Pontiac vehicles to the Chevy brand. One former Pontiac machine that is likely to come back wearing bowties is the G8 ST or “Sport Truck”. Along with the Chevrolet emblem, it will likely also feature a new name.
Jalopnik reports that they heard from three sources within GM that management is seriously considering bringing the former Pontiac G8 ST to America as the Chevrolet El Camino. Many were excited about the arrival of the sporty half-truck through Pontiac until the plug was pulled on Pontiac.
The prospective El Camino is projected to be hit showrooms as early as 2014. It is currently being sold in other countries under different names. LupiniPower, a South African tuner company, took the Chevy Ute SS and bumped it up to 535 horsepower and a stump-pullin’ 590 pound-feet of torque, reports CarScoop.
We are excited about the potential return of the Chevrolet El Camino. With all the factory upgrades already available for the South African models, we can already see the potential of this truck.
Below you can watch a video of the Pontiac G8 ST which was featured at the New York Auto Show several years ago. This early concept will give you a good idea as to the goals GM has for this vehicle.
