Hemmings Find of the Day:1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Convertible

Turning up for sale in North Carolina is a mint condition 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Convertible. This car is a relic from the Proto-musclecar era, the period in the early 60s where cars evolved from their 50s big-finned counterparts, but weren’t quite the rugged musclecars that would define the late 1960s.

In the years since it’s demise, Oldsmobile was largely remembered for producing boring 4-door compact cars – but in 1964 this was not the case. In 1964, Olds produced the some of finest performance luxury cars, you might even refer to these cars as Luxury-muscle.

This 1964 Olds Dynamic 88, with it’s cherry red paint job, chrome trim, and all-American styling was a car designed to cruise the open highways. It was designed to drive down a two-lane road, with the top down and the wind blowing through the hair of the girl in the passenger seat. This was a car you drove to the local drive in to show off to your friends and, the car you cruised around in.

While Dynamic 88 was mainly a cruiser, it could hold it’s own in a stop light drag when the situation arose. Underneath it’s hood sits a mighty 394 cubic inch Rocket V-8 that is capable of producing 300 horsepower. This was enough to hold its own against a Ford Galaxie or Plymouth Belvedere in 1964, and enough to destroy any Civic SI or Subru WRX today.

The 394 is equipped with a 4bbl carburetor and believe it or not it’s capable of achieving 22 mpg, according to the seller. He also had this to say about the car:

“Rocket engine 394, 4bbl carburetor. Great highway cruiser, 22 mpg and a looker. Recent top and new (July 2013) two-tone seats, door panels and boot. Runs well, good oil pressure, voltage and temperature. PS, PB. Body panels in good shape, no major rust, could use new paint. A dry car both top and body.”
