Just recently on eBay was this real ’70 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30 up for bids. This was Oldsmobile’s answer to Chevy’s LS6 Chevelle and cars like Plymouth’s HEMI Road Runner and other equally-equipped big block intermediates. We think of Buick and Olds as providing us with more luxurious models, than of supplying weapons for street racing, but there’s no doubting that this cool W-30 is one true performer.
One of roughly 2,574 built, this one still has its original cold air-inducted 455ci engine. The Olds has been meticulously restored after racking up about 120,000 miles on the clock.
The only part not original to the car is its Turbo 400 transmission, which was replaced sometime in the 70s. This very rare Olds has all its correct equipment and it has very desirable color combination with its Twilight Blue paint and white interior.
It has undergone a very complete and thorough frame off restoration, including documentation with a partial build sheet, and verification from the 2nd and 3rd owners of this car.
The W-30 was Oldsmobile’s secret weapon during the muscle car era, and it was the fastest performance package offered in a 4-4-2. Just seeing this example of a restored original car makes us wonder how many are left, not to mention if you have one, where do you locate all the hard to find original options like the red inner fender wells, the ram air system, intake manifold, or rear end cover.
Sure there are some reproduction parts out there, but with an original car you really want original parts. We’re thinking if your in the market for a real deal hot rod Olds you better scoop this one up, as there can’t be too many left.
