Hump Day Holeshot: Disco Shootout Between ’74 Cougar and Cutlass

For the life of us we can’t figure out why there isn’t a modern day version of the old car TV shows that Bud Lindemann used to do. This is another installment from his arsenal and is a comparison test between a ’74 Mercury Cougar and a ’74 Olds Cutlass.

If you’ve ever seen his videos you’ll know well that Bud was none too happy about what was happening to the American auto industry in the 1970’s, with cars getting larger, heavier, and more and more choked back with smog equipment.

In this video he used key phrases in describing the Cougar such as, “What ever happened to the posh, jazzy little pony car? It obviously fell into the Ford calorie tank and fattened up like so many entries from the Ford stable.”

In describing the performance of the Cougar Bud grumbled, “As I watched the Cougar on the track, I found it hard to believe that back in ’67 Dan Gurney drove a Cougar in the Trans Am series.” Jeez Bud, tell us how you really feel.

For you GM fans, don’t get too smug. The Olds didn’t get off any easier! In commenting on acceleration tests Bud said, “If you get bored on the way to 50 in the Olds you may may fall asleep on the way to 60. Our run to 15.6 seconds.” In regards to the braking tests on the Cutlass Bud quipped, “The binders on our test car were pulling severely to the right. No amount of correction would keep it in a straight line.”

Keep ’em coming, Bud!
