It seems like the entire Rat Rod phenomenon hit the market like a ton of bricks a few years ago, but it has been building for a while. Certainly, rat rod builders have produced some unique vehicles over the past few years. However, of recent it seems that there is distinction that does not occur to some builders and that is the difference between a “rat rod and a “ratty” rod.
In this eBay auction, we certainly have an example of the former. Yes, it’s long and low, with the requisite ‘cow catcher’ radiator grille and open wheels, but the 500cui Cadillac engine, Turbo 400 tranny and 9-inch Ford rear axle demonstrate proper ‘rod street cred.
This rod’s 2 x 3-inch tube frame will make sure that it’s low riding stance remains consistent over the years and nice touches like the electric cooling fan will keep it reliable.
On the Rat side of things, the satin and matte black finish present a more contemporary look than aged, bare metal ever could. Check out the interior for signs of rattiness and you’ll note the open floor, and when it comes to ‘filet’ of rattiness, the bullet holes in the passenger door have to be a chart topper.
Located in Schenectady, NY, the seller says that the car is fast and fun. We’ve no doubt of that. With just a couple of days’ bidding left, the auction hasn’t cleared the owner’s reserve bid. The current level, $4,250, is way below what his car is worth.
If you’re looking for a unique toy, this one looks like a good deal and one that probably won’t leave you stranded – either physically or financially. Certainly, while we always recommend that any major purchase be thoroughly inspected before completing the deal, this one could be an easy close.
