One Unique Isetta Hubcap Purse Spotted At The GNRS

Wandering through this year’s Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California, we managed to see a lot of great and unique auto related accessories that we would not normally be exposed to. One of the most unique items that we picked out of the crowd was a custom purse.

While it may not hold as much as an overnight bag, this custom BMW Isetta hubcap purse can hold the essentials.

What made this purse more unique than others we have seen was that it was made from two complete Isetta hubcaps. For those that don’t know, the Isetta was a subcompact originally made by an Italian refrigerator company, and later by BMW.

The odd little car’s entire front opened up to expose the passenger compartment, which was little more than a two person bench seat. Outfitted with a four-speed transmission, the chain-driven, one-cylinder, four-stroke, 13hp powerplant would propel the little bubble car from 0 to 31mph in 30 seconds.

The purse was sported by Upland, California, resident Kiki Hahs, whose husband Greg is an Isetta Restoration Specialist. Greg and Kiki also belong to the South West Unique Little Car show and have hosted several events. As it turned out, they had a couple of vehicles on display at the GNRS, with one of them being the legendary 1958 Isetta Lakers tribute car.

The hardest part was finding the exact right hinge to hold the entire project together.

About the purse, “Every time he builds a new car, I get a new purse,” said Kiki. “For the Isetta, this was the keepsake treasure.” According to Kiki, the purse was pretty simple to make for her husband. “The hardest part was finding the hinge that would work,” she said.

We loved the purse because of its uniqueness, and to be perfectly honest, after seeing the purse, we had to backtrack and get a closer look at the Laker tribute Isetta. Well done Greg and Kiki. Well done.
