With the 17th Southwest Nationals just around the corner, the dedicated staff at the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association have been rounding out their Top 12 Cars of the Year with some incredible builds set to be put on display at the final event of the season, including this gorgeous ’29 Model A roadster pickup truck. A true meshing of custom, 1970s restomod, and modern-day build quality, it’s no wonder this truck was just named the winner of the Goodguys 2014 Street Rod Headquarters Truck of the Year-Early Award!

gg_2014_street_rod_headquarters_truck_2Owned by Art Varrath, this ’29 Model A roadster pickup was passed down by Varrath’s father in 2007, undergoing its transformation under the talented hands of Doug Gonzales and his crew at Lucky 7 Speed Shop in Sutter Creek, California since.

Completely scratch-made from the ground up, the truck features a custom chassis, cab, bed, roll pan, gas tank, louvered front valance, stretched doors, running boards, and aprons.

Other defining features of the truck are custom arced fender openings that match the arc of the Daytona wire wheels, which are wrapped in Excelsior shoes, and a Garrett Leather interior with Sid Chavers baseball stitching, one-off Zebrawood banjo steering wheel and floor, and Redline Gauge Works instrumentation.

gg_2014_street_rod_headquarters_truck_3Powering the truck is a 400 ci Chevy small-block engine topped off with three Stromberg 97 carburetors, as well as custom headers and valve covers. Handling capabilities are overseen by the nickel-plated independent front suspension and a four-bar rear suspension, while the quick change rearend and Wilwood brakes take care of all the heavy pushing and pulling.
