Regarded as one of the world’s finest institutions dedicated to cataloging the history and evolution of the automobile, the Petersen Automotive Museum is scheduled to receive an interior makeover. This will compliment the recent exterior update that morphed the old facade into a work of flowing art.
According to a recent post from Hemmings, “The new layout, designed by set design company Scenic Route, will also have a dedicated space on the second floor for an Art Center College of Design satellite design studio as well as 22 different galleries throughout the museum, some of them named after donors to the museum’s capital campaign.”
The three floors of the museum will be entirely reworked, but according to Terry Karges, the museum’s executive director, “The interior renovation won’t begin until late October, after the museum’s annual gala.”
Hemmings did a nice writeup on the latest news and the layout of the new interior will be as follows: “The first floor will include both the contemporary art gallery and the Mullin Grand Salon dedicated to ‘some of the most iconic and beautiful cars from the past century…The second floor of the museum will focus on the industry of the automobile, with exhibits on racing, customization, manufacturing, and alternative-fuel technologies. The third floor will focus on the history of the automobile, both in Southern California and around the world.”

If you’ve never visited this staple amongst LA’s must-see stops, the museum is always updating its schedule of events. Definitely consider including this monument to automotive culture in your next Southern California trip!
