A Pro Wrestler, The Cops, And One Bad LS6 Chevelle!

Last year we scoured the seemingly endless rows of cars at the Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. We followed up with several of our favorite findings in our recap article, here.

One of the cars we didn’t get to share with you in our list of favorites, is Bob and Cecelia Satterfield’s 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS. That is certainly not to say it wasn’t because it didn’t make the cut. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. We just didn’t want to short change such a badass car and an even more entertaining story.

After all, how many of you can relate to speeding tickets sidelining plans you have for your hot rod? We can! This was the exact place Bob found himself. As a teen, he somehow convinced his parents to cosign for a used LS6 Chevelle from a local dealer in Georgia, – but, we’ll let Bob tell it.

Bob’s Chevelle was a bad ride then, and still is today!

“Its a real ls6 Chevelle – it’s not a clone. Its got the 454ci 450-horse engine, an M22 Muncie Rock-Crusher transmission, and a 4.10 Posi-Track in the rear. I got it when I was 17 years old – that was about 44-45 years ago, and I’ve owned it ever since. Eventually, I parked it after three years of driving it in high school, because I got too many tickets.”

In case you were curious…Can you name the options not ordered?

“From there, it sat until three years ago when I got it repainted and restored. I had it restored in Cartersville, Georgia, but the body shop that did the work has since gone out of business. The only problem they ran into during the restoration was dealing with the aftermarket vinyl top from the wrestler that previously owned it – Bullet Bob Armstrong. Bullet Bob was the 1964 wrestler of the year.”

The trippy thing about Bob’s Chevelle is the previous owner. The prior caretaker was none other than professional wrestler, “Bullet” Bob Armstrong.

“In 1974 it [the Chevelle] was sitting on the used car lot in Vincent’s Chevrolet in Georgia. It sat there for a while because of the gas crunch going on at the time. I had saved my money up and I was looking for a car. Somehow I convinced my mother if she would buy it for me, I had the money to pay for it. So, she was the partner in the crime – so to speak.” Bob said jokingly. “After about three years, she found out about all the tickets because I was under her insurance.”

The purchase really stemmed from Bob’s cousin who had a ’68 Firebird, and Bob wanted to run next to him. “He had a ’68 Firebird, and I raced him every day. I mean, I had people coming from different counties wanting to race me, and I never turned ’em down. But, the police never caught me racing – they just got me for everything else.”

Cecelia even chimed in and mentioned that all Bob had to do was pull out of their high school parking lot if he wanted a race. Bob recalled when he was in high school he had 10-inch wheels on it, and some headers. Luckily, he had the foresight to save all the original parts, though. He even kept the Muncie shifter after he swapped it out for a Hurst.

We’re just impressed that a 19-year-old kid had the wherewithal to save things like that. Especially since he had so many tickets to pay, even back then those parts would have fetched a pretty penny. Bob told us, even the guys who restored the car couldn’t believe it – the only issue with the car was some very minor rust from Bullet Bob’s vinyl top.

Since you all want to know as bad as we did, when we asked Bob who won between him and his cousin’s Firebird, he guffawed, and simply said “Ha! Oh, I blew everybody away!” Although, he quickly admitted, there was only ever one car that gave him a run for his money. “It was a Barracuda – a ’69, and he had some kinda methane/alcohol – something injection. My problem was, I couldn’t get off the line. I was still roasting my tires, and he was gone.”

“It was good honest fun back then.”- Cecelia Sattersfield

That spurred Bob and his cousin to remedy the traction problem he was having. Bob and his cousin saw some ladder bars in a hot rod magazine, and decided to fabricate some of their own. That’s what we love about a story like Bob’s – even when he talks about his car now, you can tell he feels like it’s the fastest car in town.

“I was already tallying my points – trying to figure out when I was going to lose my license.”

He even reminisced about a time he was racing and he  blew his driveshaft apart at the U-joint. Bob said, “I was winding it out, and all of a sudden I look back and see a bunch of parts flying around. I had blown apart my driveshaft, but it was okay – I had already won the race. He was still back there dodging parts.”

$527.00!? We can’t say it’s more than we’ve paid, but this was in 1976. OUCH!

Unfortunately, as he mentioned, it didn’t take long for Bob to get himself in trouble with the monster Chevelle. Finding street races and messing around with his cousin’s Firebird were a common past time, but it all came at a price. Bob racked up several tickets, and moving violations in his Super Sport. Who can blame him? But, those carried weighty fines. In the photos he showed us, the he paid well over two-thousand dollars in fines to the county of Marrieta – that’s a huge sum of money today, let alone in 1976!

In fact, in the photo above, you can see Bob almost had his license revoked. That is, until he got his aunt involved- she worked for the county courthouse. (Hopefully that little trick is past the statute of limitations.) Fortunately for Bob, he was able to combine some of his charges, such as reckless driving, and improper starting. Combining the infractions allowed him to retain his license, and only 12 of the original 22 points went on his record.

So, with higher insurance premiums looming and bail amounts rising, it comes as no surprise, Bob decided to store his Chevelle before he got into more serious trouble with the law. Luckily, he never got rid of it.
