It is exceedingly rare that a race car’s color scheme and livery can be just as memorable as the victories or the car itself. But the Ford GT40s that dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans during the 1960s are so popular, and so famous, that the light blue and orange livery applied by primary sponsors Gulf Oil has become synonymous with the car. You see those two colors, you think GT40.
That is exactly what Morgan & Phillips Speed Apparel is going for with their 1967 Ford Fairlane 500, which will be adorned in the famous Gulf Oil livery. The car is being built for a SEMA debut, and will feature period-correct modifications in the same vein as the famous GT40 race cars it imitates.
Details on the modifications and sponsors of this unique project car are still forthcoming, but suffice to say the concept and color scheme definitely grabbed our curiosity and attention. There are so many possibilities with a project like this. We have to wonder if this Fairlane 500 will get a replica of the GT40s famous V8 engines, which ranged in size from 255 cubic inches to a massive 427.
Even more radical would be if Morgan & Phillips converted this Fairlane into a mid-engine monster. The Fairlane certainly is big-enough, though that project might be a bit too ambitious given that SEMA is less than 3 months away. Whatever comes of this project though, we’re definitely looking forward to the final product.
