Back when the cars we today consider classics were brand new, many people went out of their way to maintain and save these cars for the future. But many more classics were used, abused, and either discarded or modified well beyond their factory modifications. Before the recent obsession with restorations and resto-mods though, many people were buying and abusing classic muscle cars as daily drivers.
With today’s muscle car market being what it is though, at least one classic muscle car owner has decided his ride deserves a better home. Over at the Hemmings Auto Blog is a rare 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible with the even rarer W-30 package that has seen its fair share of the road, and now the owner wants it to go to a better, proper home.
Once upon a time Oldsmobile made some awesome muscle cars, the 442 chief among them. In 1970 the Olds 455 V8 became the standard engine option, with output rated at 365 horsepower and an astounding 500 ft-lbs of torque, though the W30 package boosted output to 370 horsepower.
In addition to extra power, the W30 package added a fiberglass hood with functional hood scoops and a low-restriction air cleaner. The package also added an aluminum intake, a special camshaft. distributor, and carburetor. While the seller has a matching engine and air cleaner, he is missing the proper distributor and the ventilation ducting is apart as well.
From there the “bad list” talks about cracks in the hood, dents and dings in the car, and just general wear and tear you might expect from driving a classic muscle car daily for 25 years. This Olds has had a hard, but fun life from the sounds of it, and it’s about time it gets a proper restoration and a place in a car collection. But even with 150,000 miles on it, the owner is still asking $95,000. Yikes! Might take awhile to find a good home at that price.
