The 2013 model year will be important to Ford’s future fortunes. Not only does it mean the launch of new models like the 2013 Fusion, but Ford plans to expand EcoBoost engine options across its lineup. But what about the “other” Ford brand, Lincoln? Car reviewers so far aren’t impressed by the Lincoln stable, but perhaps the 2013 Lincoln MKZ can change some minds.

Perhaps indeed. While the official launch of the 2013 MKZ is still months away, the configurator on the Lincoln website has gone live, giving us a chance to max out our dream Lincolns, as well as get the skinny on this all-important sedan.

What we noticed right off of the bat is that the standard engine on the 2013 MKZ is a 2.0 liter EcoBoost 4-banger. With 240 horsepower and 270 ft-lbs of torque, it’s a bit less powerful than the optional 3.7 liter, 300 horsepower V6…but it uses a lot less fuel as well. With the EcoBoost MKZ starting at $36,800 though, we don’t think too many buyers are worried about the cost of gas.

If you do opt for the V6 version with all-wheel drive and all the options, you’re looking at an MSRP over over $53,000 for essentially a tarted-up Fusion with an optional (and extremely cool) panoramic roof. Is it any wonder Lincoln sales are in the dump? We’re not saying Ford won’t sell any 2013 MKZ sedans; judging from the looks and price, it should do just fine. But Ford really needs to consider adding a third engine option; the 3.5 liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine.

That just might give Lincoln sales the kick in the ass they need.
