Next week is a big deal for Chrysler, newly purchased in its entirety by Fiat in a do-or-die deal. It’s also a chance for a do-over on the Dodge Dart, which landed at dealerships as a bit of a dud thanks to an initial batch limited to manual transmissions, and overlapping engine choices.
The 2014 Dodge Dart seeks to remedy the situation with the Blacktop Edition. Based on the mid-level SXT model, the Blacktop adds a few nice features in addition to the Dart’s most powerful engine option, the 2.4 liter Tigershark four-cylinder.
Following in the footsteps of prior Dodge Blacktop models, the Dart variant gets larger, unique 18-inch wheels as well as black accents for the grille, grille surround, and headlight bezels. The interior also gets the blacked-out treatment to give the Dart a more “sinister” feel, though just how wicked a mass-produced compact car is supposed to feel, we’re not entirely sure.
Buyers can choose between either black-and-red, or black-and-tungsten interior treatments, with red accent stitching adorning the center console, instrument panels, and seat bolsters. Sure, it’s not the most exciting Dodge to every roll across the dealership floor, but at least Dodge is making the effort to appeal to enthusiasts looking for a car that causes just a little bit of hesitation in the hearts of other morning commuters.
