Back when TLC could still call itself “The Learning Channel” without any hint of irony, the rust-to-restomod show Overhaulin’ launched with famed car designer Chip Foose. The novel concept set up a deserving owner of a classic-but-crummy car, tricking them into thinking their car had been destroyed or stolen while a team of mechanics actually rebuilt it with high-end, modern parts.
All manner of vehicles have crossed through the Overhaulin’ shop, but after 11 years the TLC show will finally call it quits after the final season that debuts on November 9th. The ninth and final season kicks off with a 1968 Mustang and a visit from Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp, reports Yahoo TV.
The mark for the first episode of the last season is Depp’s wife Amber Heard, who is being set up by Depp and Amber’s father, David Heard, to give her long-neglected 1968 Ford Mustang a much-needed overhaul. The trick they use to deceive her is particularly brutal, with a supposedly scammy shop parting out her classic Mustang after an alleged altercation between the shop owner and her father. Of course no altercation occurred, but being none-the-wiser, Heard is understandably upset.
Once it’s revealed that she’s actually on Overhaulin’, her horror turns to excitement as her rebuilt ‘68 Mustang is revealed. Just what’s done hasn’t been revealed yet, but it is estimated that each finished car has a price tag of around $150,000 despite being built in about a week’s time. It was one of the best car-centric shows of this or any other television era, and frankly, we’re sad to see it go while “reality” shows like Gas Monkey Garage grow only more obnoxious.
At least we have one more season to enjoy before saying goodbye for good.
