Let’s face it, the station wagon is one vehicle that doesn’t always get a lot of love. These days, the wagon has been replaced first by the minivan, then the SUV, and now the crossover. There are so many wagons out there that deserve the attention they aren’t getting, and if you do it up right then you’ll have yourself one great looking cruiser.
Every once in a while one shows up and makes die hard muscle car guys of the two-door variety stop and take notice. They see it in a different light than they ever did before, and they admit to themselves and those around them, “Now that’s a really cool looking wagon”.
Usually, everyone else around them agrees because they, too, are impressed by not only the work done to it but that someone took this leftover predecessor to the SUV and minivan era and made it desirable. Wagons can be pretty cool, and some of them make you want to go out and build your own just for the hell of it.
No less impressive is the 83 Malibu Wagon that Aaron Watkins and his dad Richard at R.A.W. Rods Restorations & Customs is building for their shop wagon. Starting with a rather homely looking 1983 Malibu wagon, the plan was to have a car that they could all fit in and make some trips.
The Malibu of the 80’s has always been a decent looking car when you decide to slap some wheels and tires on them, and a few of them made their way to drag strips. This once “kid hauler and grocery getter” is starting to look like a real winner with the work that’s getting done, and the only thing we really wonder about is how much shop time this wagon is going to get and how much cruising it’s going to do. We’re keeping an eye on this wagon.
