The AMC Pacer was never a very popular car. It sold in fairly modest quantities compared to competitors from the Big Three, and there was little to set it apart from the masses. About the best things that can be said about the Pacer were that while it was on sale, it was one of the cheapest, safest, and widest compact cars you could buy…though that did nothing to save off AMC’s eventual bankruptcy.
But there are still those out there who find the Pacer to be a cool car, perhaps in an ironic way. Yet there is nothing ironic about this 1978 AMC Pacer fitted with a modified 360 V8. This crazy compact is up for grabs on RacingJunk.com for the best offer.
Before we make a guess at a fair price for this Pacer, we should point out all the unique features, starting with the supercharged Mopar 360 V8. This engine is the centerpiece of this build, and is backed by a 727 automatic transmission with a 3,500 RPM stall converter.
Obviously this Pacer was built for the drag strip, but it seems quite streetable too. That said, the engine is wedged into the bay like nobody’s business, and the proximity of the air cleaners to the cowl is…unsettling to say the least.
This Pacer is loud too, with the blue-accents, blue wheels, and glossy black paint job. You’ll be hard pressed to ignore this car, and people will get a kick out of the fact that its a Pacer. The unifyling look of this compact race car may not be for everybody, but there is a lot of blood, sweat, and money into this car. We can’t see it going for a dollar less than $20,000…and if the seller holds out, he could probably get a lot more.
But that might take a while; not everybody is up to explaining what the car is and who built it a hundred times a day.
