If you want a car that will create commotion wherever it goes, look no further. Batrodz Ressurection Garage out of New York state has built a 1955 Futura show car replica based on a stretched 1987 C4 Corvette chassis. Sprayed out in gallons of minty green paint, this thing is an homage to the Ford show car of the 1950s and the George Barris-built Batmobile from the 1960s TV show.
Ford design chief George Walker was on a roll in the fifties. He was coming off a grand slam hit with the two-seat Thunderbird of 1955 and he oversaw an army of talented designers. His Futura show car was a test bed for all sorts of new-fangled design ideas. It made the rounds on the show circuit and even starred in a Hollywood movie. The Futura appears at around 1:1o seconds into the clip below starring Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds.
This replica recreates the Futura while adding the radiused wheel wells from the Batmobile. You could argue it’s the best of both worlds. According to the seller, “This car is the only one ever built using the design elements of the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car and the 1966 Barris Batmobile to create a hybrid style hot rod. The almost 20′ long fiberglass body is built on top of a stretched 1987 Corvette convertible with 77,000 original miles that has a clean title and Carfax.
“This is not a completely accurate concourse quality show car in any way nor was it intended to be. This car was built to be more of a muscle car with the sole purpose of being used and enjoyed for local car shows, parades, and cruise nights. The ’55 C4 Futura is powered by a 5.7L L98 engine converted to a carburetor, and a four-speed automatic transmission.”
We think it’s a beauty and with the Corvette chassis, it should be fun to drive. If all this turns you on, it’s for sale on eBay for $84,995. Go here for more details.
