By definition, the heart and soul of an American muscle car is it’s ability to turn (and burn) the rear tires. The rear-wheel drive nature of the muscle car is key to its identity, though in recent years rear-wheel drive has fallen out of favor with the general population. Even those of us who love to burn rubber can have a hard time justifying a muscle car if we live in an area where snow is a threat for half of the year.
That is why some automakers, including Chrysler, offer their rear-wheel drive sedans with an optional all-wheel drive system. But that doesn’t have to detract from sporty nature of these V8 sedans, which is why Dodge now offers the AWD Sport package for both V6 and HEMI V8-powered Dodge Chargers.
Both the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are already available with all-wheel drive on both V6 and V8 models. The new AWD Sport package adds some sporty flair, including 19-inch rims, a blacked-out crosshairs grille, and all-season performance tires. More importantly though, the AWD Sport package is the first application of the new steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and sport-mode transmission calibration.
If you opt for the Plus models on either the V6 or V8 Chargers, you can even add heated Napa leather seats to your new Charger. These packages run $1,395 for the V6 models or just $1,195 on the R/T models, which Chrysler says is a 40% savings had these options all been added separately. We’ll take their word for it, but we have to ask…can an all-wheel drive Charger still be classified as a muscle car?
