Over the last twenty years, the automotive landscape that was once dominated by American car companies has slowly been eroded by a new generation of enthusiasts. These guys are more into their Japanese imports than classic American muscle…and while we try to be open minded, the oversized spoilers, obnoxious whiny exhausts, and flashing lights don’t impress anybody but the feeble-minded. These “ricers” give true car enthusiasts, no matter their brand affiliation, a bad name.
But let’s remember that before import-driving idiots started stickering up their Hondas, good ol’ boys in America were chopping, slamming, and modding classic cars…often times with questionable judgment…like this 1968 Mercury Cougar we found in the Hemmings Classified section.
Where do we begin? Well lets start off on a positive note…the chopped roof of a classic Cougar actually looks pretty good if you ask us. Seven-inches is a pretty substantial chop, but if they had just stopped there, this might not have been a bad looking muscle car. But the builders didn’t. Rather, they went much, much farther…starting with not one, but two roof scoops.
Now roof scoops are a bad idea to put on any car that isn’t a rally racer…but it is downright heresy to put on a classic muscle car. And don’t even get us started on the reversed dome hoodscoop. Ugh. Ly. The interior at least is nice, and there’s only a 1,000 miles on it…probably because nobody wanted to be seen driving it. It takes all kinds, we suppose…but we think this old Cougar is a prime needs to be put out to pasture. Or at least get rid of the roof scoops!
