As we all know, one of the biggest offenses a car builder can make is to use a drivetrain sourced from a different manufacturer – especially when the vehicle originates from one of the Big Three and the power comes from another. Corvette owners, in particular, are some seriously diehard fanatics that don’t take kindly to the sullying of “America’s Sportscar” in any way. And that’s why this modified C3 is so awesome.
On the surface Greg and Susan Boger’s 1981 Chevrolet Corvette seems like your typical resto-modded gen three ‘Vette, but there’s a rather sizable twist to the story.
“As we were making one final sweep of the [JDRF] car show we walked past this C3 and caught a flash from a chrome emblem coming from the scoop on the front fender. For whatever reason, we looked down and noticed a cobra emblem…from a Ford,” writes BangShift’s Bryan McTaggart.
Turns out that Greg bought the C3 for Susan in 2012 in fairly rough condition and set about making it road worthy, but they quickly realized that 190 horsepower 350 motor just wasn’t going to cut it.
Greg, being a self-described Ford guy actually had a 4.6-liter Ford V8 laying around, along with a 4R70W overdrive automatic. Not exactly a match made in heaven for a Corvette, but certainly a vast improvement from the stock running gear. “We used about every tub of Crisco we could find to get that motor in there”, says Susan.
With Chevy small blocks being the de facto V8 swap in, well, just about everything, it’s nice to see the tables get turned every once in a while.
