What is your favorite vintage SCCA Trans Am car of all-time? It seems like a simple question on the surface, but it can get complicated as you try to decide for yourself. Do you stick to your brand or team loyalty, or do you go with the historical statistics? Maybe it’s Mark Donohue’s ever-dominant Penske Z/28 Camaro, or perhaps Parnelli Jones and his pack-leading Boss 302 Mustang, or maybe another car altogether?
Recently the guys over at Speedhunters asked their readers what was their favorite Trans Am race car from the late 60s or early 70s, and the results were somewhat surprising. The final poll numbers break down like this…
- AMC Javelin – 8.55%
- Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – 11.77%
- Camaro Z/28 – 15.24%
- Boss 302 Mustang – 28.2%
- Dodge Challenger T/A and Plymouth ‘Cuda AAR – 36.24%
As you can see, here in 2013 the Mopar(s) score a decisive win. Divers like Sam Posey and Swede Savage earned the cars plenty of notoriety and won their fair share of races, but yet the Mopars never won a championship back in the hey-day of the series. Regardless, we can still totally understand why the Mopars won the poll – there is just something about those big E-bodies in Plum Crazy Purple, Sublime Green, and Lemon Twist yellow, with those signature black stripes that really does capture the spirit of vintage Trans Am.
So tell us in the comments below – what is YOUR all-time favorite vintage Trans Am race car, and why?
