When Ford retired the Crown Victoria, the market for police cars was thrown wide open for Detroit’s auto industry, and Chrysler was quick to respond with the Dodge Charger Pursuit. But Ford and GM haven’t been idle either, with the new Taurus-based Police Interceptor and Chevy Caprice PPV (respectively) capturing its share of the municipal car market.
When it comes to all-out performance though, Chrysler has updated the 2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit, and the upgrades are paying off. The Michigan State Police just set a new department record for police road test, as well as setting the fastest lap of any police car ever at Grattan Raceway.
The Michigan State Police are a major buyer of police vehicles, and being home to the American auto industry certainly helps the local boys in blue carry some extra weight. Chrysler was especially keen to improve on the performance of the Dodge Charger Pursuit, improving the suspension as well as ground clearance to allow for high-speed median crossings. Chrysler also upgraded to 14.5-inch rotors on the front end to allow for a 60 mph stopping distance of 127 feet.
Additionally, Chrysler added the new SecurePark feature, which prevents the Charger from being put into Drive if the key fob isn’t on board. These improvements helped the Michigan State Police lap Gattan in 1:33.85, and an average lap time of 1:34.75. That beats out the Ford Police Interceptor with EcoBoost by about a second, something Chrysler is sure to brag about to prospective fleet buyers. After all, the cops need to be able to keep up with the bad guys, right?
