Once upon a time, NASCAR actually raced stock cars that were based on the production bodies of cars sold in dealerships across the country. But since then NASCAR has come to be more about speed than stock cars, and as a result stock car racing looked nothing like the days of old, each body little more than a few stylized stickers representing non-performance cars like the Ford Taurus and Toyota Camry.
But there is a shift at the highest levels of NASCAR competition to make the race cars look like production cars once again. Ford has already shown off its 2013 Fusion NASCAR competitor, and now comes a teaser from Dodge of its all-new Charger stock car racer.
Like Ford’s 2013 Fusion stock car, the new Charger will be based on the Car of Tomorrow chassis. Also like the Fusion, it looks like the new Charger Sprint Cup competitor has lines much closer to the production model. That’s a huge plus for any fan of classic stock car racing, where the old adage “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” came from.
It actually almost makes the Charger NASCAR look like a coupe, which makes us salivate even more. While most Mopar fans have gotten over the four-door nature of the new Charger, we all still secretly pine for a two-door version. Dodge will reveal the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Charger this weekend, just before the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We’re hopeful other competitors will follow suit with more stock-looking stock cars.
