Buying a new car can be a real pain in the ass. After shopping around and settling on what you want, now you’ve got to try and get the best deal from one of the local car dealerships. This requires good haggling skills, which can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars off of the MSRP. It ain’t easy, but there could be an easier way.
eBay is trying out a new experiment whereby it offers new cars for sale at slowly-reducing prices. Every hour the car is up for sale, the price drops by $500 until someone buys it. Wait too long and you might get burned, but if your timing is good you could get a great deal on a brand new car like the Dodge Challenger or Chevy Camaro.
Sure, most of the cars eBay is offering for sale are of the more pedestrian variety, like a Toyota Prius C or a brand new Ford Escape. Even the Challenger offered for sale is a V6 model, albeit one with an upgraded sound system and Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment system.
The starting price of this reduced-price Challenger was $26,960, but the price dripped by $500 every hour. After 24 hours, if nobody had bought the Challenger the price would have gone down to just $14,960, almost half of the starting price.
That is a slamming deal, and we doubted eBay buyers would let it get that low. It sold quickly for just $19,960 after only being listed for 14 hours.
We think this is a great way to start selling new cars, and a lot more fun than haggling with an experienced salesmen. Will you be watching an auction like this one for a chance to snap up some cheap American muscle?
