The early 1970’s were a period of confusion and upheavel in this country. The muscle car era came to a screeching halt, and suddenly automakers had to develop and sell fuel-efficient cars. Ford decided to import some of its European models, notably the Capri, and while they sold alright, the nameplate died in 1993 with the poor-selling Mercury Capri convertible. But trust us; those vintage Capri’s are much, much cooler.
Just take a look at this eBay Find of the Day, a ‘73 Ford Capri race car straight off the boat and ready for a restoration, or a race, whatever you’d like to do.
According to this eBay ad, this particular Capri was raced just one time by Chuck Goldsborough. It won its first and only race, and was later sold in racing condition and stored away for 25 years, coming out for this auction. The 2.6 liter V6 engine is out and ready to be rebuilt, but the car is otherwise a fully race-prepped vehicle with rollcage, fuel cell, and a race-built body.
With the engine and transmission removed from the car, you could take this interesting ride in just about any direction. How about a modern 5.0 V8 shoehorned in? You could also opt to place a smaller 2.0 liter 4-cylinder and compete in the B-class races. The options are nearly limitless, and we guarantee this unique whip will get attention wherever it goes. At the bargain price of just $4,000, it’s a great starter project for somebody who wants something different, challenging, and just plain old cool.
