If you aren’t already packing up and on your way to Pomona, California, you’d better be after reading this. That’s because the Grand National Roadster Show is well underway at the Los Angeles County Fair Grounds, attracting over 1,000 visitors of the kustom and vintage disposition.
Billed as the “Grand Daddy Of Them All,” the GNRS has been a consistent highlight of the SoCal car scene for well over sixty years. Those who bring along their slick rides to display not only meet and make new friends, but also get the chance to win the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) award, one of the biggest and most respected titles in hot rodding culture.
Presented by the L.A. Roadsters Car Club, the AMBR award goes to a roadster (obviously) that has no fixed roof, nor has rollup windows. Criteria is more or less subjective, but guided along by the following question: if all the keys were in the ignition and ready to go, which one would be the most fun to drive off in?
This implies, of course, that the roadster can also move, brake, and steer under its own power, while also producing a satisfying exhaust note. Most times, the winner is the owner of a Ford, but 2014 saw Wes Rydell and his 1935 Chevy Phaeton come out on top.
We’re eager to find out who will be the lucky son of a gun this year. If you are too, make your way out right quick before the event ends on the 25th. You can also stay up to date with Facebook and the GNRS website.
