Scott Walters, a muscle car enthusiast from Virginia (known as “Bulletpruf” on Pro-Touring.com), has begun an extensive build that will create a road hugging racer out of a ’71 AMC Javelin. Already equipped when current owner Scott bought it, was the original Z-code 401 V8, TH400 transmission (originally a Borg Warner automatic), 3.15 ratio AMC 20 rear end, Rim-Blow steering wheel, A/C, power steering, and power disc brakes.

On the forums, Scott stated that he’s had all kinds of muscle cars, but never an AMC. Apparently this Javelin tickled his fancy.  When Scott acquired the car, it was definitely in the project stage, but the car was in overall great shape, being totally rust free and complete. After buying the car, he took a lot of the extra parts and sold them off.  In his words, “the car actually paid for itself.”

Using money from his extra parts, Scott replaced the TH400 with a close-ratio T-10 four speed manual transmission. That’s not where it ends though. Scott has already sent the car to Piper Motorsports in Sterling, Virginia to handle fabrication. The Javelin recently had a complete custom roll-cage installed, as well as Kirkey racing seats.  Nearly the entire car is disassembled, but Scott has big plans for his ’71 Javelin.

Future plans include an upgrade to either a T56 or Tex Racing T101A transmission, using a Lakewood blow-proof bell and a Centerforce dual friction clutch.

Among other things, he’s planning on installing a Control Freaks independent front suspension, which would effectively transform the Javelin into one helluva handler.

The 401 engine is nearly ready to go, complete with Edelbrock heads, forged TRW 2380F pistons, a McLeod aluminum flywheel, oiling mods for increased oil pressure, a custom grind cam from Ultra-Dyne, Torker intake manifold, and headers. The engine’s output should be somewhere in the 450 horsepower vicinity.

Scott’s Javelin may still be a way off from completion, but it will be interesting to see this unique road racing project come to fruition.
