What’s old is new again, or at least that’s how it goes in the custom car world. For decades hot rodders have been grabbing up all the old school, original steel bodied classics that they could find, and they were quite thorough. It is estimated, for example, that there are now more 1932 Ford coupes now than were actually built in 1932.
Ford, it seems doesn’t have a problem with that. The Blue Oval already offers officially licensed 1965-1970 Mustang coupe bodies, and ‘67 through ‘70 Mustang droptops among other vehicles. Now you can add the 1940 Ford coupe to that list as the latest brand new old-school body, announced live at the SEMA show.
The new, complete body shell of the famed ‘40 coupe will set you back $11,990, though there have been a number of modifications over the original design. This includes several different firewall options that will allow buyers to either use an original Flathead Ford V-8, or a more modern motor should they see fit. You can buy the whole thing or as individual panels, officially-licensed through Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts. But if you’re going to start fresh, why not start out with the whole shabang?
While Ford will no doubt have an incomplete steel body on hand to show off their new ‘40 coupe, Ford is also bringing a modified ‘40 coupe with a new Coyote 5.0 stuffed under the hood. That’s definitely a good start…but why not the GT500’s 662 horsepower 5.8 liter V8? Hey, if you’re gonna do it, do it big.
What do you think should be the next new old-school body Ford offers?
