Speaking by phone on the FOX Car Report Live recently, Ralph Gilles, CEO of Chrysler’s SRT lineup, told the show host that rumors of a return of the Dodge Dodge Magnum are just that – rumors. The high performance station wagon’s resurrection is not in the cards.
The rumor apparently started after a California press event where there was some informal discussion about the popularity of the Magnum, particularly in California.
When asked about the rumors, Gilles replied, “There really aren’t any plans. Right now, we’re focused on the products we have.”
Introduced as a 2005 model and based on the LX platform, the Dodge Magnum was Chrysler’s first station wagon model since 1991. As a derivative model of the 300C, the car drew a small but dedicated following. The car was axed, along with the PT Cruiser and Pacifica, during the company’s most recent financial troubles.
With an optional 5.7-liter HEMI engine, five-speed overdrive automatic transmission and rear drive configuration, the SXT model provided a sleek looking car with muscle car performance for just a fraction over $30,000. Factory stock erformance was held back somewhat by the 4,179 pound curb weight, but still not shabby at mid-sixes for 0 to 60 mph runs and high-14s at 95 mph in the quarter mile.
Rest in Peace, Magnum. Perhaps we’ll meet another day.
