Few cars are more sought-after than the legendary Boss 429 Mustang. Ford went to incredible lengths to stuff the new Shotgun Hemi engine into its pony car in 1969, and it only offered the option for two years. The Grabber Orange Boss 429 Mustang you see here will go across the Barrett-Jackson auction block in Las Vegas this weekend, and we want it. A lot.
Ford offered the Boss 429 Mustang in five colors in 1969: Royal Maroon, Black Jade, Wimbledon White, Candyapple Red, and Raven Black (there was one built in Silver Jade by accident). For 1970, you could again order the Boss 9 in five colors, but they were five completely different colors: Grabber Orange (like the car you see here), Calypso Coral, Grabber Blue, Grabber Green, and Pastel Blue. Of the two years, the 1970 is far less common, with only 499 getting shipped to dealers, vs. 850 in ’69.
This Mustang Boss 429 is powered by its factory-original matching-numbers 820-A 429ci V-8 engine rated at 375hp, paired with a matching-numbers close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and original 3.91 Traction-Lok differential, according to Barrett-Jackson. It is equipped with competition suspension, power steering and power brakes with front discs. The 820A was the third and final version of the engine. It had a solid-lifter camshaft (shared with the 429 Super Cobra Jet), and a slightly larger 780 cam Holley four-barrel, among other upgrades.
The exterior is finished in Grabber Orange and features a functional front spoiler (larger than the one used in 1969), semi-gloss black hood scoop, color-keyed racing mirrors and restored original 15-inch chromed Magnum 500 wheels. The only exterior identification is the Boss 429 stenciling on the front fenders.
The white knit vinyl interior features restored high-back bucket seats with a console, black carpet, Deluxe Interior Decor Group and Visibility Group. It is equipped with an NOS smog system and NOS spark plug wires. The vehicle was built at the Dearborn, Michigan, assembly plant, then sent to Shelby in care of Kar Kraft, per B-J.
It was sold new at Marcel Guthier Auto LTEE in Sorel, Quebec, Canada, dealer No. B230259. Included in the sale is a window sticker and 2026 Deluxe Marti Report that shows the car to be one of approximately seven finished in Grabber Orange with a white interior.
